Libreoffice A Free Great Alternative to Microsoft Office Suite

Libreoffice is a free open source office suit software that you can download and install for free. This is my favourite office suite and  I even prefer it over the Open Office. Libreoffice has a set of writing and editing tools that resemble  Microsoft Office.So if you already know how to open an office and write a document or spreedsheet then you will find Libreoffice way easier.

Libreoffice is free and there is no fear of copyright infringements. It works on almost all the major operating systems including Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X and GNU/Linux ( Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora, Mandriva, Suse,...)

Drawpr Share Files and Docs for Free

Drawpr is a cool website that allows its users to upload and share their documents with friends and colleagues. This is a tool I have just discovered and I am adding it to the list of free File Sharing Tools I am collecting in Educational Technology and Mobile Learning.

Drawpr is free and easy to use. It offers an empty bucket that can be filled with docs and files. Users can just drop and drag their docs into that bucket and this latter will generate a link for them to share with others. The uploaded files can remian in the bucket for up to 28 days after which they will be removed if no action was done.

Users can benefit from the services of Drawpr without even being signed up but in case of registrations, users will be able to host their files for a longer period and they can also have much freedom in managing their docs and files the way they want.

Today I am sharing with you a bunch of awesome file sharing tools. These tools are practically useful to teachers, educators, and students who are the primary targets of my posts here but anyone else can use them too. Apart from the first two tools which I have just added today all the rest have tutorials here just click on the name of a tool to read it.

1- Just BeamIt

JustBeamIt is a great HTML5-based web service that allows users to exchange files in a fast way. Here are some of the features that Just BeamIt offers to its users:

Let's Crate is another free file sharing application .It is very simple and easy to use . It allows you to share files that amount to 20MB with whomever you want .  Dropbox is one of my best applications that i use on a daily basis . Dropbox offers a very handy and most of all intelligent way to store and share files online . It is very simple and has no complicated set up .You just need to install a folder in your computer which takes about 5 minutes and then fill in your information ...

Bee PDF is a free hosting and sharing website . It allows its users to upload their PDFs and share them with others ....

Files over Miles  is a browser to browser file sharing tool  which allows its users to send files directly to other users using just a browse.....

Fyels is one of the best file sharing and hosting application online. It is different from most of the other file tools in that it does not take so much time for the download to take place. You can upload your file instantly and share it with others in no time. There is a public URL that is generated at the end of each upload to enable others to view and download the file......

Senduit is a free file sharing service . If you are sharing a sensitive file using a url then you can select a time period after which the link to the file would expire.. 

Saveitt – Free File Search Engine

Saveiit is a cool web application. It is a document search engine designed for LEGAL education purposes only. It allows its users to easily and instantly search for different kinds of documents including the following formats: PDF, DOC, PPT, and XLS.



To search for documents on Saveitt , you can either select the name or browser category and the type of format. In case you didn't choose the format  the file format can always be filtered using the options in the left pane of the search results.
What is great about this too is that its results are highly filtered. So you will expect to get each result with the name of the document, its size, upload date,and total number of downloads. Saveitt can let you preview the document and download it right from the website.

DocToImage – CONVERT ANY DOCUMENT INTO IMAGE

DocToImage is a great web tool. It , as its name imply, allows users to convert documents files into JPG images. This is a good alternative to Microsoft users who feel helpless when it comes to sending and sharing their docs and files with non Microsoft users.



DocToImage is very simple to use and does not take long time for the conversion to take place. It also lets its users share the generated JPG image with friends and colleagues. I do recommend this tool for educators.

Fyels is one of the best file sharing and hosting application online. It is different from most of the other file tools in that it does not take so much time for the download to take place. You can upload your file instantly and share it with others in no time. There is a public URL that is generated at the end of each upload to enable others to view and download the file. You can also see how many times your file has been downloaded. This service is all free and educators need to have a look at its features for future uses in their classrooms.

MiMedia – a great back up system online

MiMedia is a great tool for educators. It is an online back up system for your files. It allows you to “protect, access, enjoy and share your digital life all in one place.” You can now access all you have stored from anywhere and not only that , MiMedia will also enable you to easily  share your photos and videos with just one click. Unlike other online back up tools, MiMedia lets you download, upload and also stream your data online.

Snip.ly is a cool web2.0 tool . It allows you to capture and share the best snips from your favorite websites . Just highlight a portion of a text in a webpage and clip it . You can then share the clipped portion with your friends or colleagues or use the generated URL to embed in an email for others to see . I love this tool because it lets me share my favorite parts of websites with my colleagues . You can try it too and see by yourself .

Bee PDF : Upload , Embed, and share your PDFs online

Bee PDF is a free hosting and sharing website . It allows its users to upload their PDFs and share them with others . I have always looked for such a website where i can get safe URLs for my PDFs and now here it is ; very simple and easy to use . Bee PDF does not charge you with any fee and it is completely free . Once you upload you PDFs into Bee PDF then you can use the generated URL to share with others and let them access your docs or you can use the embed code to include your PDFs into your website, wiki or blog . Bee PDF allows you to read and browse through PDFs published by others .

I am sharing with you this post because i know many of you need this tool in their work . You can upload PDFs you want to share with your students and give them their URLs or if you have a blog for your classroom then you can use Bee PDF to embed your PDFs there .

Join.me ; share your screen with students

Join.me  is a free service that allows its users to connect together and share their screens . Using Join.me Mac and Windows users will be able to see what is going on on each others screens . It supports up to 250 people . To start using it you need to download and run the app . This service has a basic version and a paid version . But the basic version is enough for us here . here is a snapshot of the difference between paid and free versions ;

Once downloaded , you need to give the nine digit access numbers to your collaborators to start seeing your screen and collaborating with you .

dropbox: the best way to share, sync and back up your files

Dropbox is one of my best applications that i use on a daily basis . Dropbox offers a very handy and most of all intelligent way to store and share files online . It is very simple and has no complicated set up .You just need to install a folder in your computer which takes about 5 minutes and then fill in your information .Let’s say for example , you have installed Dropbox on your laptop and have uploaded some documents to it ;  when you are on another computer ,say at school , you can view all the documents you have uploaded and you can even download them and do any changes you want , whatever changes you did will instantly appear on the Dropbox folder you have in your laptop .Isn’t that pretty cool ? . wait till you finish this tour and you will see how important Dropbox is in our life .

In fact everything Dropbox offers is pivotal to education .This is a tool that every teacher MUST have and work with . We can use it to :

• write our lesson plans and save them for a later use at school . Don't worry , you do not need to install a folder every time you want to check your Dropbox documents , you can just go to Dropbox webpage and log in to see all the things you have saved to your folder at home .
• share homework assignments , documents , videos …etc with your students or colleagues by saving them to a public folder that everyone can access via a generated URL

Let's Crate is another free file sharing application .It is very simple and easy to use . It allows you to share files that amount to 20MB with whomever you want . I personally think that you should give Let's Crate a shot and see if you would like it . I have been using it for awhile now and have found it extremely helpful .
