Cross Word Puzzles – create puzzles easily

Cross Word Puzzles is a great tool for educators that is again offered for free by Read Write Think. I really love this tool for it allows you to make interesting puzzles very easily and at the instance of a click. Hey !!! you do not need to be a technology or math wizard to start using it. It is very simple to use and all it takes is filling up the boxes. I still remember years ago when i wanted to create a synonyms puzzle it took me almost five hours to come up with the columns, grids, clues and words and now i can do the same work in 15 mints , you see how technology is changing our life for the BEST.



How can i get started using Cross Word Puzzles

Head over to Cross Word Puzzles main page
Click on get started
Fill in your name and select the grade

Click on create your own or you can choose of theirs
Give a name to your puzzle
add words to it then click on create puzzle
Now you can click on add clues to clue your words
click on finish and you will have your finalized crossword at your hand for printing.

Present.me is a great web 2.0 tool. It allows its users to record and share their presentations using their webcams. It is really one of the best presentation app available online . You can now embed your power point files into slideshows and record yourself  talking or explaining your slides and the result is an awesome slideshows illustrated with your video clips . I love this website and i would really recommend that you give it a try.

Corkboard is a cool web2.0 tool for educators . It allows you to create corkboards to help you organize your postings . For instance you can create ‘Books I Read’ Corkboard and put all of your books related postings in there . It is very handy and practical and above all it is free to use . It looks like Wallwisher and Dropbox but simpler than them all .

PhotoPeach : Create Rich Media Slideshows for Free

A picture is worth a thousand words and the use of pictures in education is very crucial for they communicate  what words could not convey . So in my research for the photo editing , hosting and sharing tools i stumbled upon this nice application called PhotoPeach .

PhotoPeach is a free  online service that allows it users to create media rich slideshows .What i like the most about this tool is the fact that it supports background music .Integrating audio into photo slideshows makes them quite engaging and presentable .

Storify is a great web2.0 tool . It is an application that allows  users to create engaging stories out of tweets . You can also  create stories using social media and turn what people post on social media into compelling stories .

TikiToki is a great application for multimedia timelines making . It allows its users to create stunning animated timelines. TikiToKi is very easy to use and above all its basic version is completely free .

It is a great way for learners to reflect upon their learning .

Join.me ; share your screen with students

Join.me  is a free service that allows its users to connect together and share their screens . Using Join.me Mac and Windows users will be able to see what is going on on each others screens . It supports up to 250 people . To start using it you need to download and run the app . This service has a basic version and a paid version . But the basic version is enough for us here . here is a snapshot of the difference between paid and free versions ;

Once downloaded , you need to give the nine digit access numbers to your collaborators to start seeing your screen and collaborating with you .

Toonti resembles the other social networking tools I have covered here earlier namely ; Tiducate and Fridge . Toonti has a bunch of features that make it one of the useful tools to be tried in education .

    slatebox :a real-time diagram tool

    Slatebox is another great presentation and online mind mapping tool . It allows its users the freedom to create as many nodes and maps as possible . It is still in beta and  all free now but premium versions are coming soon too .

    • It allows you to bed slates and embed them anywhere
    • It is reliable and many browsers support it
    • It lets you Customize your slates : colors, shapes, sizes — from connecting lines to nodes to the backgrounds.
    • It does not require any plugins
    • It allows you to Embed, enmesh, or simply link to your slates and share them with the world.

    Click on ‘ double click ‘ to choose what kind of node you want


    Double click in the empty space to create a node

    3. select the lines , borders and text
    4. change the background image , colour and border
    Click on ‘ properties ‘ button to give it a title and description and choose privacy settings


    click on ‘ collaborate’ to allow collaboration


    Once you have finished with your slate click embed button on the top bar

    if you want to export it as an image click on ‘ export’ button

If it happens that you come across an interesting  paragraph in a certain webpage that you want to share with your students or friends just highlight the targeted  chunk of text and paste it into Citebite together with the source URL and send the link to whomever you want to share this text with . Once they click on the link they would instantly  access the website and see the highlighted text you want them to read .
